AC Milan, Inter move closer to €1bn San Siro redevelopment

AC Milan and Inter Milan have taken steps in their €1 billion project to renovate the iconic San Siro, with plans officially submitted and a 2030 completion date targeted.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala confirmed that the clubs were expected to submit their economic plans on Tuesday, with construction projected to begin in 2027.

If approved, the new stadium will be built on the existing parking lots behind the Meazza’s west stand, boasting a capacity of 71,500 seats, including 13,000 for corporate and hospitality sections.

“We must issue a public tender, but it is clear the premise will be an area dedicated to football,” Sala stated.

“The goal is to sell the stadium and surrounding areas to the teams before summer, allowing construction to begin.”

The Stadio Meazza, due to its cultural significance, will remain intact until 2030, with redevelopment only commencing once the new stadium is operational.

This marks a shift from the 2021 “The Cathedral” proposal, which was abandoned due to demolition restrictions.

On the pitch, the Milan rivals are experiencing contrasting seasons.

Inter lead the Serie A table as they aim to defend their Scudetto, while Milan sit eighth, trailing their city rivals by 15 points.
