UK Warns Israel Against Retaliating Over Palestinian Statehood Recognition

The UK has urged Israel not to take retaliatory measures, such as annexing parts of the West Bank, following its recognition of Palestinian statehood. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper made the statement ahead of a UN conference in New York, where France and other European nations are expected to announce similar recognitions.

Cooper emphasized that the decision is rooted in promoting peace, justice, and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. She stressed that extremists on both sides aim to derail the prospect of a two-state solution, but the UK remains committed to reviving it. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the move, calling it a step toward peaceful coexistence between the two states.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, pushed back, declaring that Palestinian statehood “will not happen” and labeling the recognition as a reward for terrorism. The US echoed his stance, arguing the move benefits Hamas, which remains excluded from any future governance under the terms of the recognition.

The UK’s decision comes amid growing international pressure on Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and accusations of genocide during the ongoing conflict. Cooper reiterated that the recognition is not about taking sides but about ensuring a better future for the region.
