2027 Presidency: Zoning Drama Deepens as PDP Courts Goodluck Jonathan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is turning up the heat ahead of the 2027 presidential race, sparking internal tension with its decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South. This move, aimed at fostering unity within the party, has caused ripples across its ranks, with mixed reactions from various factions.

As part of its strategy, PDP leaders are reportedly holding high-level talks to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to make a political comeback and contest for the presidency under the party’s banner. Sources close to Jonathan revealed that while he appreciated the effort, he has yet to commit, stating that he’s “still consulting” before making a final decision.

The zoning arrangement hasn’t been without backlash, with Northern groups and aspirants questioning its fairness and political implications. Presidential hopeful Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has outrightly rejected the move, calling it undemocratic and vowing to challenge it at the upcoming national convention. He insists that the presidency should be open to all based on competence, not regional allocation.

Meanwhile, PDP leaders have defended the zoning decision, describing it as a sacrifice for unity rather than an endorsement for any individual, including Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, whose name has been linked to the arrangement. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State echoed this sentiment, urging party members to prioritize collective progress over personal ambition.

With consultations intensifying and internal divisions widening, all eyes are now on the PDP’s November convention, which promises to be a pivotal moment in shaping the party’s path to reclaim power in 2027.
