Mangu attack: Uphold freedom of movement, Sani urges fellow govs

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has called on his fellow governors across Nigeria to uphold the constitutional right to freedom of movement for all citizens, as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Speaking during a condolence visit to Kudan Local Government Area on Tuesday, Sani emphasised that the foremost responsibility of any government is to safeguard the lives and property of its people, regardless of their origin or faith.

“Whether you are from Kaduna State or elsewhere, as long as you live in Kaduna, we have the responsibility to protect your life and property and ensure you live in peace,” he said.

The visit was to commiserate with families of 12 residents of the local government who were ambushed and killed in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State while travelling to a wedding. Governor Sani was accompanied by top government officials on the visit.

The governor praised the people of Kudan for not resorting to reprisal attacks, describing their restraint as exemplary.

He also lauded the local chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria for fostering harmony among Christians and Muslims in the community.

“I’m glad to hear from the CAN Chairman that Christians and Muslims in this local government live in peace. This is a testament to our collective commitment to unity in Kaduna State, a state renowned for its diversity,” Sani stated.

Highlighting the administration’s strides in fostering peace, the Governor noted that Kaduna had not experienced any major ethno-religious crisis in the past two years, attributing the stability to the political will of his government.

The governor recounted his earlier visit to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, to sympathise with the survivors of the attack.

He described his visit to Kudan as an opportunity to not only console the grieving families but also appreciate the community’s peaceful disposition.

In response to the tragic incident, Sani pledged infrastructure projects for the community, including the construction of a hospital and the tarring of the Kudan-Basawa road in Sabon Gari Local Government Area.

“This community deserves development because they have demonstrated remarkable peaceful coexistence,” he added.

Speaking earlier during the visit, Kudan Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Dauda Abba commended the governor for his compassion and active engagement since the incident occurred.

“The governor has shown that he is a just and empathetic leader who genuinely cares for his people. He has been mourning with us and has had sleepless nights over this unfortunate event,” Abba said.

He assured the governor that the people of Kudan would remain law-abiding and not engage in reprisals over the killing of their loved ones.
