Flood Crisis: 232 Dead, 121,000 Displaced as States Ramp Up Efforts

Nigeria is battling one of its deadliest flood seasons, with 232 lives lost and over 121,000 people displaced across multiple states. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the floods have wreaked havoc in 34 out of 36 states, leaving 339,658 people counting their losses. Niger State alone accounts for 163 fatalities, making it the worst-hit area, followed by Adamawa with 59 deaths.

The disaster has also left more than 42,000 homes damaged and 48,000 hectares of farmland destroyed, sparking fears of food insecurity. States like Kaduna, Nasarawa, Bauchi, and Jigawa are stepping up emergency measures, including sensitization campaigns, evacuation plans, and relief distribution. Jigawa, for instance, credited proactive steps like river dredging and embankment construction for minimizing displacement.

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, challenges such as resource shortages and inaccessible flood-prone areas have slowed down responses. Humanitarian groups and local leaders are urging for both immediate relief and long-term investments in flood prevention infrastructure. With the rainy season still underway, many are bracing for potential further devastation.
